The Ski Base Ski School

The Ski Base Ski School offers a range of ski lessons for ages 5 and older. It is run through The Ski Base at Mt. McIntyre Recreation Centre and is sanctioned by the Whitehorse Cross Country Ski Club. Lesson Schedule

Kids Learn to Cross Country Ski

Getting comfortable on skis. Learning to play safely on hills and exploring the trails.

Age: Ages 5 to 11
Cost: 3 one hour lessons - $35 / (second child - friend/family - $25)
Dates: December 27, 28, 30
Time: 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Enrollment: Minimum 2 - Maximum 8
Rentals: $15 extra

Youth Learn to Cross Country Ski

For youths 12 to 15 who have not skied before. Learn to classic and having fun on hills, intro to skating.

Age: Ages 12 to 15
Cost: 3 lessons - 1  hour lessons - $35
Dates: December 27, 28, 30
Time: 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Enrollment: Minimum 2 - Maximum 8
Rentals: $20 extra

Adult Learn to Cross Country Ski

ADDITIONAL LESSON SET!
For skiers 15 yrs and older who have never skied before. Lessons include: how to wax, how to select equipment, basic diagonal stride, basic up/down hill.

Age: Ages 15 years and older
Cost: 3 lessons - 1 1/2 hour lessons - $50
Dates: January 18, 25 and February 1
Time: 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Enrollment: Minimum 3 - Maximum 8
Rentals: $25 extra

Adult Private Lessons

Cost: Individual - $35 (1 hour session)
Groups of 2 - $25 each (1 hour session)
3 or more $20 each (1 hour session)
Dates: By arrangement, weekdays preferred

Classic Skills Clinics

For skiers who want to improve their classic technique (diagonal stride and double pole - uphill and downhill techniques).

Cost: 2 lessons – 11/2 hours each - $40 per person
Dates: January 17, 24  - 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Minimum Enrollment: 3

Learn To Skate Clinic

For experienced skiers who want to try skating. Waxing, equipment evaluation and selection, basic skating skills

Cost: $25 for 1 1/2 hour lesson / $15 extra to rent skating equipment
Dates: January 31 - 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Enrollment: Minimum 2

Noon Hour Drop in Clinics

Lunch hour sessions for skiers who have experience.

Time: All sessions run from 12:15 to 1:00 p.m.
Cost: $10 per session. Must book day before.
Sessions:

January 9        - Weight Shift -  classic
January 13      - Marathon or 1/2 Skate - why and how
January 16      - Balance drills - classic or skate
January 20      - Power drills - skate 

CANSI Instructor - PRE - Level I Clinic

Dates:
January 30 – 9:00 a.m. to 12 noon
or
April 7   6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

This clinic is for those who are interested in taking the Level I CANSI course next year.  You will be shown the standard for Level 1 diagonal stride, double poling, snowplow, and 1 skate and get feedback to help you achieve the Level I standard.  Participants should be comfortable on downhills and fit enough to negotiate most uphills.  Participants will receive pointers to improve their skills and will learn a few drills and progressions to help with teaching this season.

The course will be held in the Whitehorse Cross Country Ski Club stadium and will be based in the Race Office which is located in the Stadium.

Snowshoeing Clinic and Tour

Cost: One hour clinic for beginners- $30 per person (includes snowshoes and day pass and lesson)
Groups of two or more - $25 per person   Club members $15
Dates: February 8, 2012  7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

The Ski Base Waxing Workshops

Hands on waxing techniques for novice skiers.

Cost: $10 per workshop
Dates:
January 11  7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.   - Glide Waxing
January 18  7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.  - Grip Waxing

Video Analysis

A great way to improve your technique.

Cost: 1/2 hr session $25 person
Includes video, private analysis, on snow follow-up, if needed.

Trail Pass and Waiver Required

Please Note!! A season pass or day pass is required to take lessons. A special beginner rate of $3 for a trail pass is available for the lessons.

All participants must also sign a waiver.

Mike Gladish – CANSI Level III Instructor and previous NCCP Level 2 Coach. Mike has 30 years of teaching experience which includes 15 years of coaching.

Cancellations and Refunds

Lessons will be postponed or cancelled if the temperature is -20C or colder or if the conditions are considered unsafe at the scheduled time of the lesson. If the course is postponed by the instructor, a credit will be given for the full value of the course. If the participant does not show or cancels at the last minute there will be no refund. If the participant cancels with 24 hours notice, a credit or refund will be given.

Official Service Centre

The Ski Base is the official service centre for the Whitehorse Cross Country Ski Club where you can rent cross-country skis, ski boots, poles, nordic walking poles, snowshoes, a child pulk and nordic blades.

Pro Shop Staff for the 2011/2012 Season

Angie Sabo,LInda Stratis, Izak Baril-Blouin, Trevor Bray, Jan Polivka, Nahanni Sagar,Moya Painter, Terri Publicover, Sarah Murray, and Cathy Hoehn. Mary Waddell will be making a guest appearance to help at The Ski Base in February.

Tune ups and Repairs

The Ski Base is now taking skis for tune-ups and base prep.  We also mount bindings, shorten poles, replace baskets, handles, straps and so on.
